霍尔与无名氏

康纳德写静很惊人,这种静不像寂静,更像是凝滞了:

The reach was narrow, straight, with high sides like a railway cutting (路堑qian). The dusk came gliding into it long before the sun had set. The current ran smooth and swift, but a dumb immobility sat on the banks. The living trees, lashed (捆扎) together by the creepers (匍匐植物) and every living bush of the undergrowth, might have been changed into stone, even to the slenderest twig, to the lightest leaf.

这段水道狭窄而笔直,高耸的两岸就像铁路上的路堑,太阳还没下山,暮色早已不知不觉地在水道上降临,水流平稳而疾速,两边岸上却是鸦雀无声,没有动静,被蔓藤缠到一起的活着的树,矮树丛中每一棵活着的灌木,都可能已经变成了岩石,哪怕是最嫩的枝、最轻的叶片。

It was not sleep—it seemed unnatural, like a state of trance. Not the faintest sound of any kind could be heard. You looked on amazed, and began to suspect yourself of being deaf—then the night came suddenly and struck you blind as well. About three in the morning some large fish leaped, and the loud splash made me jump as though a gun had been fired.

这不是睡眠—这不正常,像是一种昏迷状态。听不到任何一点哪怕最微弱的声音,你惊奇地注视着,开始怀疑自己变聋了—接着黑夜突然降临,让你一下子变成了盲人。凌晨三点钟左右,几条大鱼跃出水面,响亮的溅水声让我蹦了起来,像是听到一声枪响。

今天,男主Marlow依然在寻找Kurtz先生的旅途中,觉得Kurtz像金刚,文章过半却还没有出场,千呼万化使出来,却半张脸都还没露出来,顿时想起《金刚1》里的一个小水手也在读这本《黑暗之心》。

但其实最初我想看这本书又不是因为《金刚》,而是《泰山归来》,肌肉大片里却偏偏萌上了沃尔兹演的反派


只因为开头时那拈花一手和之后那句带着自知说出的“里昂·罗姆”。

据说历史上真实的里昂·罗姆有可能是《黑暗之心》这位千呼万唤还不肯出来的Mr. Kurtz的原型(之一),因为作者康纳德应该见过罗姆。

罗姆也确实够格做这个原型,他既是利奥波德二世的手下干将,又是个在刚果混得风生水起,甚至入乡随俗地用人头去装点自己房屋的男人。最初是因为他才想看《黑暗之心》,出于对边缘人格的好奇,带着一种不大礼貌的窥私癖,想看看人是怎么能变成这样。

可是历史上的里昂·罗姆却并没有死在非洲的雨林里,他又回到了比利时,并且过得还不错。可见即使Kurtz的原型是他,他却也终究不是Kurtz。书已过半,我大概终究是和Marlow一样,被Kurtz吸引了,发誓一定要找到他。
